The Moons of Krynn

For any Wizard of High Sorcery, tracking the effects of the moons on the day to day working of magic is essential.

Krynn's Sky

There are three moons on the planet of Krynn, and each is the face of one of the gods of magic. They chose not to put themselves in stars or planets, but to be as close to Krynn as possible so as to watch it. Wizards of High Sorcery draw power from these moons and their respective gods. The moons are the white moon Solinari, representing the god of good magic, the red moon Lunitari, representing the god of neutral magic, and the black moon Nuitari, representing the god of evil magic. Nuitari as a moon is little known; it can only be seen by those who use it for their magic. Most people believe in only two moons, Solinari and Lunitari.

In addition, the other gods of evil and of good have a constellation representing them, whereas the other gods of neutrality, aside from Gilean, who has a constellation, have planets.

Moon Alignment Effects

If the moons themselves are in alignment, additional modifiers apply to the various robes. The following modifiers are cumulative with those from the Moon Phase Effects Table. On the Night of the Eye, when all moons are in alignment at High Sanction, this results in a +3 saving throw bonus, +4 additional spells and +2 effective level when casting spells.

Alignment Saving Throw Additional Spells Effective Level
Solinari and Lunitari +1 +1 +1
Nuitari and Lunitari +1 +1 +1
Solinari and Nuitari +1 0 Normal
All Three Moons +2 +2 +1

Moon Phase Effects

The following table indicates the effect that the phase of a moon has on the corresponding robes of the magic user. The phases of each moon only affect wizards of the corresponding colored robes, though there is an effect if the moons are in alignment (see Moon Alignment Effects).

Moon Phase Saving Throw Additional Spells Effective Level
Low Sanction -1 0 -1
Waning Normal 0 Even
Waxing Normal +1 Even
High Sanction +1 +2 +1*
*Only available to wizards 6th level or higher with Intelligence scores of 15 or better. Additional spells may be of any level the wizard can cast.

Wizards of High Sorcery

The Wizards of High Sorcery stand as the oldest, most feared, and most respected of all the orders of the world of Krynn. These wizards draw upon the focused arcane magic granted by the moons and the gods of magic associated with those moons.

When the gods of magic first formed the orders, wizards were taught the Foundations of Wizardry:

  • All wizards are brothers and sisters in their order. All orders are brothers and sisters in the power.
  • The places of High Sorcery are held in common among all orders and no sorcery is to be used there in anger against fellow wizards.
  • The world beyond the walls of the towers may bring brother against sister and order against order, but such is the way of the universe.

Test of High Sorcery

Wizards begin their training at an early age, usually under the tutelage of a tutor or within the halls of a wizard academy. Such training weeds out those who are not serious about the Art, and prepares those with the gift for magic for the time that they must take the Test of High Sorcery.

The Conclave of Wizards

The Conclave of Wizards is the governing body of the Wizards of High Sorcery. The Conclave consists of seven members of each of the three orders. Each Order selects one of the seven Conclave members to be the Master of that order.

Renegades

Arcane spellcasters who do not follow the tenets of the Wizards of High Sorcery are branded renegades. While renegade wizards draw their power from High Sorcery, their magic is not affected by the moons. These renegades are classified as Brown Robes
